But of course, Trichophyton mentagrophytes doesn’t just live on athletes’ feet—it’s the most common skin fungus, and nearly 70% of the population will experience it at some point in their lives. Closed athletic shoes and damp socks are a luxurious “spa” for this microorganism. And it's highly contagious, so don’t walk barefoot in gym or pool showers, and always pack flip-flops when you travel!
